Have you ever found yourself back at square one, unsure of which direction to turn? Have you ever let go of a dream you once longed for? Have you ever felt so lost that you lost hope, where hope seems to slip through your fingers like grains of sand? A feeling that leaves you questioning yourself, your dreams, and the path ahead.
For college students, like me, who desire to study in a state university without any tuition fee, the path we pursue may feel predetermined by the quotas and available slots in college courses leaving us with seemingly no choice but to follow through with the given option which in my case is Operations Management. How frustrating. Waking up for something that is not part of your plan is demotivating, demoralizing even. But then, there it is, practicality, tapping you on the shoulder, whispering, "Time to roll up your sleeves and get up."
During the first year on a new track, I feel so lost, you will feel so lost—amidst the excitement of novelty, there's an undeniable sense of disorientation. And in these moments of uncertainty, self-doubt creeps in like a silent intruder, casting shadows on our confidence and clouding our sense of self-worth. Questions also arise about whether to shift courses in the next academic year, transfer to a new university, or settle. And I decided to settle. Suddenly, inexplicably, somehow, the burdens that once felt insurmountable begin to lighten, and the shadows that clouded my vision start to dissipate. At first, I thought it was just a fleeting moment, attributing it to good relationships with colleagues, the warmth of fleeting connections, or the peace of acceptance. But no it was not—it's something more.
I realized that where I am right now was meant for me.
As I discovered more about Operations Management—a flame ignited new dreams and aspirations. At first glance, I believed Operations Management (OM) was only for those interested in working in the manufacturing industry but, I was wrong. OM is responsible for maintaining and enhancing an entity's efficiency, handling an organization's day-to-day operations, optimizing resources, securing efficiency, and facilitating sustainable improvement, all of which contribute to meeting the objectives of an institution. As I peeled back more layers of Operations Management, I was met with a rich tapestry of roles and responsibilities, each more diverse and dynamic than the last. What began as a mere curiosity soon blossomed into a deep-seated fascination, as I uncovered how OM penetrates various facets of the business sector.
Upon immersing myself in the management world, I discovered new dreams and career paths, such as Project Manager, Production Manager, Business Process Analyst, Consultant, and, of course, Operations Manager. Armed with newfound wisdom, realizations, and a sense of purpose, I am now recognizing the opportunities and starting to believe in my capabilities; no longer shackled by self-doubt, hindered by uncertainty or “What Ifs.” Here’s where I fully acknowledge that maybe life's twists and turns have a purpose—leading us toward better plans.
Remaining steadfast to your plan is great, it is a testament to your persistence and grit—a foundation for success. Nevertheless, settling is not a sign of weakness but an embodiment of resilience—a willingness to bloom where we are planted. Remember, it is never easy to embrace the unknown, the unexpected. It takes a lot of courage to let go, accept, and start anew. But through time, acceptance, and discovery, the dream we once let go of, will be the awakening of something more.
Living a life you did not plan and roaming a dream you did not imagine may be disheartening, fueling your head with “What Ifs.” But how about we turn those “What Ifs” into “Even Ifs” and “Why Nots.” Unlock the secrets to embracing the unexpected and igniting fresh dreams with these tips:
1. Try
Try to accept, learn, love, and explore Operations Management or the course you’re taking. How will you know if something is not for you if you don’t try? Trying will push you to encounter new experiences, circumstances, people, and subject matters, which may pave the way for growth, competency, resilience, and the rise of underlying interest and passion, thereby facilitating opportunities and self-discovery.
2. Attend Class (Physically, Socially, and Mentally)
Attending class will allow you to discover and ignite potential interest. The course material will give you a glimpse of what you are stepping into, which may resonate with you, awakening a new enthusiasm and passion for Operations Management or the course you may be taking. Being present in class may also allow you to meet new people, gain diverse insights, and find inspiration and solace during your new journey.
3. Be Inspired
Keeping your fire lit regardless of the path you are taking will serve as your drive, a powerful motivator, to keep going and stay committed. This will ignite your passion for learning and propel your determination to overcome adversity and unforeseen events. By staying inspired, you can discover meaning and purpose in your endeavors.
4. Trust the process
Having faith in your journey is akin to believing in your own evolution, even amidst the most unpredictable and daunting circumstances. It empowers your confidence in navigating uncertainty and embracing new challenges as opportunities for growth and transformation. Trusting the process is like granting yourself the gift of time—an opportunity to ascertain passions yet discovered and awaken dreams yet to be dreamt.
5. Stay Present
Planning for the future is a good step towards a successful life and career path. However, you should let yourself enjoy and savor the ‘moment'; staying present will enable you to engage in learning, discussions, and opportunities fully. Being in the moment allows you to discover and seize value, meaning, and purpose from every curb of your journey, ultimately allowing you to succeed and drive your fuel.
Regardless of the journey ahead, whether we settle or shift, it is important that the steps we take will lead us closer to the more profound sense of fulfillment and contentment we seek. And so, I chose to settle—not as an end but as a beginning—a beginning of a journey filled with productivity, gratitude, wisdom, and opportunities that come from embracing the unexpected with an open heart and a steadfast spirit.
